SCOTT DOUGLAS ON THE PODIUM IN ROUND 3 THEN BARK RIVER BITES BACK

Scott DouglasBark River, Michigan—After a few tuning changes to the chassis following Friday afternoon practice, Scott Douglas was confident he had a fast truck for Saturday’s Round 3 of TRAXXAS TORC Series presented by AMSOIL racing. Qualifying Saturday morning proved the point. Scott Douglas blistered the track with a 1:20.2 second lap – 3/10s quicker than the next fastest truck driven by Johnny Greaves. Normally the number one qualifier starts in the front, but USAC officials decided to shake up the points race and have the top six drivers draw for starting position. Douglas drew a six, bumping him back to the outside or row three.

Following a parade lap, TORC dropped the green flag on a rolling start, which launched the 800 horsepower trucks down the hill toward turn one. The trucks ahead of the number 7 AMSOIL Kumho F-150 fanned out and there was no opportunity to improve position so Douglas fell in line in the sixth spot around turn one. The track was soaked from heavy rains in the weeks leading up to the race, and the track crew worked hard to deliver a fast racecourse for both the racers and fans.  Continue …

Douglas Motorsports – THREE RACES, THREE PODIUMS, DOUGLAS SECOND IN PRO 4X4 POINTS

Douglas MotorosportsCrandon, Wisconsin—The driver with the highest percentage of professional short-course off-road podium (top three) finishes chalked up three more at the 2010 TRAXXAS TORC Series presented by AMSOIL season opener. Scott Douglas, team owner and driver of the AMSOIL Kumho Ford F-150 is currently second in PRO 4X4 points, just six behind Rick Huseman.

Douglas understands that consistent podium finishes are one of the secrets to winning championships and he should know; Scott Douglas has 11 professional off-road racing championships to his credit. “We are here to win races, but you can’t gamble a potential championship away by being overly aggressive on the race track,” stated Douglas. “Crew Chief Jason Schampers and the entire Douglas Motorsports crew prepared a flawless truck for all three races this weekend. We had zero mechanical issues.” That’s impressive considering Sunday afternoon’s action included the round two of PRO 4X4 points race and the all-out 17th Annual Crandon Cup Challenge.

In round one of TORC Series race action, Douglas delivered consistently quick lap times and finished third on the podium. Crandon International Off-Road Raceway is faster than ever due to changes made during the off-season. Added banking and berms in some of Crandon’s trickier corners have changed the lines and passing opportunities drastically. Scott Douglas adjusted quickly, but the crew also went to work on more changes to the truck to make it faster for round two early Sunday afternoon.

Douglas MotorsportsWhen the PRO 4X4 pack rounded turn one in the second points race of the weekend, those changes were obviously right on the money. Douglas was first into and out of turn one and running in clean air was able to open up a comfortable lead on the field. Lap times for the number 7 AMSOIL Kumho Ford improved on each consecutive circuit until the full-course mandatory yellow that bunches the field back up to a single file restart.

When the green flag dropped on the restart, Rick Huseman had a run on the outside that shuffled the top four positions. Douglas dropped to fourth in the chaos, passed John Greaves and battled Steve Barlow for position on the podium. Douglas gained valuable season points for leading at the mandatory yellow and a third place finish to lock in second place in the 2010 PRO 4×4 championship points race.

For the 17th Annual Crandon Cup Challenge, race officials start the PRO 2WD trucks 12-seconds ahead of the PRO 4X4s. After the delay Douglas pitched the AMSOIL Kumho Ford F-150 into turn one beside Johnny Greaves and on the rear fender of Steve Barlow. Scott wasted little time, passing Barlow for the PRO 4X4 lead two turns later in the “Gravel Pit.” Then it was a flat-out race to catch and pass the PRO 2WDs. Leaders Ricky Johnson and Jeff Kincade were setting a fierce pace, but Douglas was relentless Douglas Motorosportscatching the field, and then picking off the PRO 2WDs one-by-one. At the white flag Douglas had Kincade in his sights but it looked like the starting deficit may have been too long. When the two trucks rounded turn one for the last time, the AMSOIL Kumho F-150 had closed the gap even more and the massive Crandon crowd was on their feet screaming and cheering.

Douglas threw his truck into the final turn hard and late, pulling inside Kincade’s rear fender. The Kumho’s found grip and the Pro Power Racing Ford V-8 launched the number 7 toward the checkered flag to a photo finish that gave the Crandon fans the closest race in the Cup’s seventeen-year history. At the line, Jeff Kincade had the edge by just .259 seconds.

On the podium after the race, Scott gave Jeff Kincade and the TRAXXAS team credit for their impressive performance, but joked that “When I got inside of him on that last corner, the thought crossed my mind to just let the truck drift up a little bit – and that’s all it would have taken…Jeff’s a good guy…but now that I see this trophy, I guess I should have!” All kidding aside, Douglas Motorsports congratulates Jeff Kincade and the TRAXXAS team on the well-deserved victory in the 17th Annual Crandon Cup Challenge.

Douglas MotorosportsRounds 3 and 4 of the 2010 TRAXXAS TORC Series presented by AMSOIL is scheduled for July 10th and 11th at Bark River Raceway in Bark River, Michigan. Baileigh Industrial RDB-050 Tubing Bender

By Brian ‘woody’ Swearingen
Friday, May 14th, 2010

Manual Tubing Bender RDB-050There are a lot of options these days for tubing benders. The vast majority of these companies come into the market with a simple manual bender and then grow their business into more sophisticated systems.

Baileigh Industrial has taken the opposite approach. They have furnished production-quality metal working machinery for many years, and have scaled their expertise down to products that an enthusiast-level consumer can appreciate, and afford. Two products that meet this criteria are the new RDB-050 Manual Tube Bender and the new TN-250 Tube Notcher.

If you’ve spent any time on their website, then you’ve already drooled over their RDB-Series of Rotary Draw Benders. Their line includes hydraulic and nc controlled systems that can fully automate a bend. But as we all know, the big limitation to these is the pocketbook…an individual or a club just can’t justify the expense.

The RDB-050 solves that issue. Manually operated…180 degree dies available…multiple bending speeds…integrated degree wheel…and the power to handle 2.50″ x .120 wall DOM or 2.00″ x .120 Chromolly.

I’ve had a bender for many years that’s been on ‘long-term-loan’…you know the deal…buddy buys one, uses it for a project, and then… It then sat in my garage for a couple years while friends used it, and just as I get to the point where I’ve got a project I need to work on, that dreaded email shows up. “Hey woody, if you are done with the bender, Jim needs it for a project he’s starting.” Fortunately, enough had changed for me that it was time to have my own…and it didn’t take much shopping time to pick the one I wanted.

Baileigh is a short 40 miles from my home, so Jason Mace and I scheduled a shop tour with Shane Henderson. Impressive. Shane showed off the capabilities of the RDB-250 for me with some solid aluminum. Again, impressive. We toured the entire facility, and they have stock on the vast majority of their machines…and quite a few on the loading dock ready to ship out. (Gallery photos at RockCrawler.com) Definitely helped solidify my decision with regards to what bender to purchase.

“Some Assembly Required” is an understatement…the RDB-050 takes a solid 3-4 hours to put together. But everything fit well and was top quality…no shortcuts taken.

The final step was the test bending…I needed a hoop for an FJ40 buggy bezel, and that seemed like the perfect start. 1.50″ x .120 DOM tubing was the choice, and once things are set and ready, the bending process was a breeze. The integrated dial indicator is indestructible, and helps keep consistency with your marks and bend points.

Baileigh, nice job. Stay tuned for more projects, my new Polaris RZR needs a roll cage!
